Movie overview and plot by

Movie in-short: N/A

Movie story-line: When a group of young filmmakers witness and film a crime of passion, the most outrageous blackmail of the century begins. By means of a fantastic plan, the filmmakers send to the murderer, a financial and industrial big shot, a copy of the movie that incriminates him and they demand him an improvement of the standard of living for the working class.

Movie synopsis: "Bandera rota" (something like "Broken Flag") has many elements of Gabriel Retes' movies, in a genre film, a thriller: beautiful presence of Tina Romero, an artistic project (a movie in this case,, furthermore, its production is stopped by money problems), critic of social, political or economical situation in contemporary Mexico from a middle class point of view and social class or ideological conflicts, for example. Retes' characters are the voice of his very personal and critical explanations of main social problems in Mexico. The importance of movies, media in general, and possession of important information are the elements used by Retes to develop an interesting thriller. Personal interests of characters are mixed and confused with their ideologies, giving them certain profundity, enough to maintain our interest. This is not a great movie, but has an interesting story and it is easy to watch. Dialogues are very natural with realistic intentions (specially inside the crew of filmmakers), but this realistic motif has the inconvenient of a very lazy use of the camera, a little boring. In my opinion images could've talk more.Violence is well manage, in the exact moment and amount, also crude and realistic, with, maybe, some memorable scenes of "Bandera rota" showing a not very common face of Retes' skills.

Murder, ethics and exploitation During the quarantine I have seen a lot of foreign cinema, and very little Mexican, which I want to amend. Of the three great contemporaries, Cuarón, Del Toro and Iñarritú, I have seen everything or almost everything, so let's diversify. There are three Retes films that I really liked at the time, each one with its limitations: El Bulto , Bienvenido/ Welcome and A sweet scent of death . This one in particular shows two of his personal obsessions: cinema about cinema, with a group of independent filmmakers at the center of the story, and casting his relatives, this time both his father and mother. Here the central performance of two greats stands out: Manolo Fábregas and Aarón Hernán. A smile comes to my mouth when I see the beginnings of Tina Romero and Paloma Woolrich. And 40 years later, my Mexico with the same problems: one law for the rich and another for the rest; violence against women; saving face more important than justice; and incidentally, the budget problems to do anything in cinema. Hernán's physical resemblance to then-president, José López Portillo, does not go unnoticed. The production design marks a radical difference between the impoverished filmmakers and the powerful ones surrounded by porcelain, sculptures and baroque details, even in the smallest piece of furniture. The last act, definitely falls into classic seventies exploitation, with blood, violence and nudity, to generate empathy for the characters, but also so that the public goes home scandalized.
